dotPhoto Print Full Review:
Sign-up for dotPhoto is easy. Uploading the first time can be a little confusing. dotPhoto takes you to a screen with numerous options for uploading. Try the recommended flash option or the Java option. The Java option seems to be faster with multiple images. If you’re uploading just to print and know what size print you want, resize your photos before uploading. The upload process is a little slow at dotPhoto.
The flash uploader takes you to a three step screen where you select an album for uploading, a file select step and an upload step. It’s straight forward and easy to use. The Java option takes you to a hierarchical view of your hard drive with a drop down box to select an album. It too is easy to use and understand.
Once you’ve uploaded your images you can begin the process of editing, cropping and adjusting. dotPhoto editing tools include an auto fix tool, red eye, rotate left/right, mirror (flip) and zoom in/out. The crop tab allows you to crop an image from 4”X6” up to 11”X14” automatically. The effects tab includes color adjustments, brightness and color effect. The color adjustment allows you to adjust the primary colors of red, green and blue in manual increments. The brightness effect allows you to adjust the brightness up or down in one-step increments with a maximum of +5 or -5. The color effect adjusts the tone to grey, brown, blue, etc. The last tab in the editing tools is a border tool. dotPhoto provides only four borders from which to select.
I didn’t find many of these tools very useful. Fortunately, a revert to original image option is available. When you make changes in the crop or effects option, you have to click on preview in order to see the changes. If you like the changes you then have to click on save or save as to keep the changes.
Cropping and editing photos in dotPhoto is somewhat tedious. Each time you make a change you have to click preview, the screen refreshes and then it refreshes when you save the image. It’s a bit time consuming with the repeated screen refreshing.
Completing the order process is fairly standard on dotPhoto. You have to select an album or individual photos. Next you review your selections for quantity and size of print. The standard size for the free photos is 4”X6”. Then provide your shipping address, credit card information and process the order. Nice and easy.
dotPhoto offers postal, 2-day and overnight shipping. The cost for shipping was $3.33 for my 50 free prints.
You can email images to your account from your cell phone.
If you decide to continue using dotPhoto for printing, they offer numerous options for printing your photos on gifts. You can also share your images with email or create a personal web site.
Overall, dotPhoto is a good printing service. Better and faster image adjustments would be nice. The offer of 50 free prints is a great offer.
